Short Downwinder

Update: all systems go for Sunday! - Given the forecast, we are going to take a chance and see if we can’t make it work.

On Sunday the 23rd of November WAKSA is facilitating A social downwinder for all levels of kiteboarder. Originally pegged as a short downwinder from Floreat to Brighton, we have decided to combine it with the long downwinder which has been cancelled twice now and run a bus to Leighton as well as Floreat. The forecast is marginal (as shown), so it may only be the short downwinder in case we don’t have enough wind to make the long option, but we’re going to ask Huey very nicely if he can help us out.

The Scarborough Beach Users Group is also planning a meeting and BBQ for that afternoon.

Having cancelled the long downwinder twice already this season WAKSA are really keen to make it happen and are going to organise bus dropoffs at both Leighton and Floreat on Sunday, wind permitting. This gives you a choice of a 13km or a 4km downwinder. Just show up at Brighton Beach Scarborough near the Kiosk by 1pm to register and we’ll get the bus going as soon as we can.

The long option goes around headlands, and is a fair distance, so you should be at a solid intermediate to advanced level of kiting. The short option is suitable for beginners or ‘Sunday Drivers’ who don’t want to cover the longer distance.

As well as the downwinder and accompanying BBQ, Scarborough locals have organised to have the first meeting of the Scarborough Beach Users Group, a collection of people who want to ensure safety and continued access to one of the popular spots in the Perth metropolitan area. Kiters, WAKSA, the surf club and the council have been invited to join forces in ensuring kiteboarders and other beach goers remain safe in the leadup to the busy time of year. Anyone with positive input is welcome to join in and help in preventing incidents and keeping this spot open to kiters.
