WAKSA Annual General Meeting

Sunday, May 17, 2009

imageDate: 14thth May 2009
Location: Swanbourne Surf Club, Marine Parade Cottesloe.
Attendance: Refer to the attendance list in the secretarial volume (Attended by 41 members)
Apologies: Michael Brooks, Anna-Marie Wynn-Houchin
Meeting Start: 7.30pm

The meeting provided pizza and cost price drinks and video entertainment consisting of the Kitelife series DVD.

Meeting Opened by WAKSA Secretary Pat Banks

Pat welcomed all members and explained the structure of the meeting. First person to speak was Catherine from UWA who presented a voluntary survey for members to fill out regarding kitesurfing accidents. The floor was then given to Phil Morrow for the president’s report.

President’s Report Phil Morrow

Phil began by thanking everyone involved in WAKSA for their efforts in the year to date.
He then outlined the issues faced by WAKSA over the year and currently, including Melville, Mullaloo and Rockingham. Mullaloo detail was covered later in the course of the meeting, but Rockingham and Melville were expanded on as part of the President’s Report.
At Rockingham a committee has been formed of stakeholders including the council, DEC, Windsurfing WA and WAKSA. This committee has been working through issues arising between different user groups at the Pond near the Yacht Club. A decision has been made to divide the pond into three zones, upwind for kiters, downwind for windsurfers and a buffer zone in between for safety. Signage is being erected to this effect.

AGM Delayed

Thursday, April 02, 2009

Due to recent issues at Mullaloo, the WAKSA committee has resolved that absolute priority must be given to the Joondalup Council submission.

As much as we hate to postpone after setting the date and sending out notification, it has been passed by a committee vote to delay the AGM until the 14th of May. Our most sincere apologies to anyone inconvenienced by this.

By the 14th we will have a report prepared and a subcommittee in place to work on the issues at Mullaloo. It will be an important agenda item to be discussed there. We would appreciate the input of the membership on this, and we urge that a united, cohesive front be presented to those who want to ban kiting at Mullaloo Beach. We would like you all to be aware that councils all over Perth are watching the progress of this issue with great interest. It is an issue that the entire membership should take an interest in.

In a bit of good news, Swanbourne Surf Club have advised that their clubhouse will be available for us on the night. We will be organising food and drink, most likely the traditional kiteboarder fare of pizza and beer, as well as appropriate non-alcoholic alternatives.

Please note, as this is an official WAKSA meeting entry is limited to the membership, so we ask that you don’t invite any non-members.

We will keep you up to date with all developments along the way. You can expect more news regarding the Mullaloo issue and other agenda and details for the AGM closer to the date.

WAKSA Downwinder Report

Monday, November 24, 2008

imageAfter standing around at Swanboune for what seemed an eternity, waiting for the storm clouds to clear and red gun club flag to drop, the wind gods smiled. It all seemed to happen at once as the white caps formed and kites were launched. What was looking like a pretty bleak day turned in to a blast as forty plus kites shot from Swanbourne to Brighton with the knowledge that hot sausages and cold drinks were at the end. All in all it turned out to be a really good day of kiting and socialising with lots of the new meeting the old. So thanks to everyone that came down and made the day a great success, we hope to see more of you at the next WAKSA event.

WACK! At Pengiun Island 9th November 08 Event Report

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

imageWe had another glorious and this time windy afternoon for the WACK! gathering at Penguin Island, Shoalwater Bay.
It was brilliant to see everyone who was able to get down to join us, I don’t think the regulars at Pengo’s still know what hit them- the beach and the waters in the bay were the busiest for kiting that I have ever seen!
There were over 20 girls (to be honest, I was too busy enjoying the vibe to keep an accurate count), as well as a good collection of supporters; thanks to the dads and grandparents for looking after the kids, and all the lads who helped out on the beach.

Hey Girls, its time to pull out the rashie and dust off the harness, as well as get your socialising hat on for the WACK! 08/09 season kick off. We will be gathering for our first event for the season (and our inaugural gathering!) from 2pm on October 19th at Pinnaroo Point. This is a casual social kitesurfing event for the fairer sex to get together on and off the water, open to all levels of kiters- we all know what it was like to be starting out! We will have bbq’s, eskis and ice, just bring yourselves, some food and drinks, and of course all your gear.

New WAKSA Website

Friday, August 29, 2008

Over the winter the WAKSA crew have been hard at work building a more user friendly website. As well as all the old favorites, like the Location Guide and News & Events sections, we have added some new features like a WA members only forum, some member poles and a new look image gallery. We have also extended the WAKSA directory by including a new section called Kiter-2-Kiter, This is a directory for all member owned, non-kite related businesses to peddle their wares to fellow kiters. Being a members only service if you still haven’t joined WAKSA yet click here and become a part of it - membership
